Foreign World : Planet - 6°

Project type

Illustration, Sculpture, Photography

Date

November 2025

Location

New York City

... A dreamlike 3D world (Planet -6°), that is close to something one of my 2D characters would live in. I Imagined a swampy sea like terrain of oil. I wanted this devilish tree, and this worlds fallen moon to be the center pieces of this location. I Imagined giant neon pillars shooting out of the water. Red squares float around them. I wanted the moon to light up and create a light source for the location, which it does. I Imagine the whole area as a home for this living mutated tree and whoever its protector it. It's playful, but dark, endless, striking, and surprisingly too welcoming.

I started with a wooden empty box that I drilled canvas boards on the side of. I then added masking tape at the seams to leave no creases, and to help the supports. I made a hollow wire structure for the moon, and covered it in thin white tissue papers using hot glue. As for the tree I used oven bake clay (275° for 1 hr) that I later primed with white wall paint. I painted it all with acrylic paint, and then added wire stitching to the front. I finished by adding some cut up faux fur and fake plants using Mod Podge.

After this, I hot glued my rods to the bottom of the base, and drilled a hold in the bottom as well for a entry point (for my light). I added a small light to the bottom hole... I filled up the rest of the wooden box with newspaper and masking tape, leaving a hollow space for where to moon would be. I covered everything I made so far in gesso (for texture), and then painted my background using black, blue, and red paint, as well as, acrylic paint markers. I added items like the tree, moon, plants, etc.. and painted all the dowels. I also added the red floating squares using black wire. I poured a clear like resin in the base and mixed paint colors to get the oil like swamp area I wanted. I then went in and detailed the whole space with paint markers. I stained and primed the exposed wood dark brown and wrote the name of the world in white.

...Pictures were drawn on and edited in Adobe Photoshop.
