An interactive, one page, 3D, battle filled comic (with a detachable collectable sword from the story) that pushes the boundaries of what a comic can become. The story follows Yellow, a boy who has a sword in his head, and his encounter and battle with a mysterious spiky attacker in the forest.
12x18 inches
The frame of the comic was laser cut wood (3 identical panels glued on top of each other), and the 4th and last panel was for the comic. The comic was printed out on paper and cut out to match the laser cut slots – they were then pasted onto the last wood layer. I placed a thin plastic layer from a frame on top of this to give it a glass like cover/casing. I connect this to the rest of the frames. I used paint markers and the negatives I painted from the laser cuttings (“Ouch” in bottom left) to decorate the frame (after staining the whole frame with a light brown stain). The doors were also made from the cutout negatives. I used beads and left over nails for the door handles, and connected the doors with small hinges and a hammer.
As for the sword, I made it using newspaper and masking tape. After this, I used newspaper strips and Mod Podge to coat the form I had created. I lathered another layer of glue on top of this and let it dry. I painted it with acrylic paint, and paint markers… then finally, sprayed it with acrylic clear coat spray. Magnets adhered to the wood and sword keep it connected without further supports.
